[1] She rose to fame on the NBC sketch comedy program Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In (1968–70), before going on to receive the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Cactus Flower (1969). Hawn maintained bankable star status for more than three decades, while appearing in such films as There's a Girl in My Soup (1970), Butterflies Are Free (1972), The Sugarland Express (1974), Shampoo (1975), Foul Play (1978), Seems Like Old Times (1980), and Private Benjamin (1980), for which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for playing the title role. Hawn's later work includes starring roles in the films Overboard (1987), Bird on a Wire (1990), Death Becomes Her (1992), Housesitter (1992), The First Wives Club (1996), The Out-of-Towners (1999) and The Banger Sisters (2002). After a fifteen-year hiatus from film acting, Hawn made a brief comeback in Snatched (2017). She is the mother of actors Oliver Hudson, Kate Hudson, and Wyatt Russell, and has been in a relationship with actor Kurt Russell since 1983. In 2003, she founded The Hawn Foundation, which helps underprivileged children. Early life [ edit] Hawn was born in Washington, D. C., [1] the daughter of Laura (née Steinhoff; November 27, 1913 – November 27, 1993), a jewelry shop/dance school owner, and Edward Rutledge Hawn [2] [3] (September 28, 1908 – June 7, 1982), a band musician who played at major events in Washington. She was named after her mother's aunt. [4] She has one sister, entertainment publicist Patti Hawn (born March 24, 1938); their brother, Edward Jr. (born February 10, 1937) died as an infant shortly before Patti was conceived. Her father was a Presbyterian of German and English descent. Her mother was Jewish, the daughter of emigrants from Hungary. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] Hawn was raised Jewish. [4] [5] [11] [12] She was raised in Takoma Park, Maryland, [13] and attended Montgomery Blair High School in nearby Silver Spring, Maryland. [14] Hawn began taking ballet and tap dance lessons at the age of three and danced in the corps de ballet of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo production of The Nutcracker in 1955. She made her stage debut in 1964, playing Juliet in a Virginia Shakespeare Festival production of Romeo and Juliet. [15] By 1964, she ran and taught in a ballet school, having dropped out of American University where she was majoring in drama. In 1964, Hawn made her professional dancing debut in a production of Can-Can at the Texas Pavilion of the New York World's Fair. She began working as a professional dancer a year later and appeared as a go-go dancer in New York City [4] and at the Peppermint Box in New Jersey. [13] Career [ edit] 1960s [ edit] Hawn moved to California to dance in a show at a theater across from Disneyland. [13] Hawn began her acting career as a cast member of the short-lived CBS situation comedy Good Morning World during the 1967–68 television season, her role being that of the girlfriend of a radio disc jockey, with a stereotypical " dumb blonde " personality. [4] Her next role, which brought her to international attention, was also as a dumb blonde, as one of the regular cast members on the 1968–1973 sketch comedy show, Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. On the show, she would often break out into high-pitched giggles in the middle of a joke, and deliver a polished performance a moment after. Noted equally for her chipper attitude as for her bikini-attired and painted body, Hawn was seen as something of a 1960s "It" girl. [16] Her Laugh-In persona was parlayed into three popular film appearances in the late 1960s and early 1970s: Cactus Flower, There's a Girl in My Soup, and Butterflies Are Free. Hawn had made her feature film debut in a bit role as a giggling dancer in the 1968 film The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, in which she was billed as "Goldie Jeanne", but in her first major film role, in Cactus Flower (1969), she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress as Walter Matthau 's suicidal fiancée. That same year she appeared in NBC 's The Spring Thing a musical television special hosted by Bobbie Gentry and Noel Harrison. Other guests included were Meredith MacRae, Irwin C. Watson, Rod McKuen, Shirley Bassey, and Harpers Bizarre. [17] 1970s [ edit] After Hawn's Academy Award win, her film career took off. She starred in a string of above average and successful comedies starting with There's a Girl in My Soup (1970), $ (1971), and Butterflies Are Free (1972). She continued proving herself in the dramatic league with the 1974 satirical dramas The Girl from Petrovka and The Sugarland Express, and Shampoo in 1975. She also hosted two television specials: Pure Goldie in 1971 and The Goldie Hawn Special in 1978. The latter was a sort of comeback for Hawn, who had been out of the spotlight for two years since the 1976 release of The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox, while she was focusing on her marriage and the birth of her son. On the special she performed show tunes and comedy bits alongside comic legend George Burns, teen matinee idol Shaun Cassidy, television star John Ritter (during his days on Three's Company), and even the Harlem Globetrotters joined her for a montage. The special later went on to be nominated for a primetime Emmy. Four months later the film Foul Play (with Chevy Chase), was released and became a box office smash, reviving Hawn's film career. The plot centered around an innocent woman in San Francisco who becomes mixed up in an assassination plot. Hawn's next film, Mario Monicelli 's Lovers and Liars (1979), was a box office bomb. In 1972 Hawn recorded and released a solo country LP for Warner Brothers, titled Goldie. It was recorded with the help of Dolly Parton and Buck Owens. AllMusic gives the album a favorable review, calling it a "sweetly endearing country-tinged middle of the road pop record". [18] 1980s [ edit] Hawn's popularity continued into the 1980s, starting with another primetime variety special alongside actress and singer Liza Minnelli, Goldie and Liza Together (1980), which was nominated for four Emmy Awards. In the same year, Hawn took the lead role in Private Benjamin, a comedy she co-produced with her friend Nancy Meyers, who co-wrote the script. Meyers recalls Hawn's reaction when she first described the idea for the story with Hawn as its lead: It was like watching the greatest audience I've ever seen. She laughed and then she got real emotional and her eyes would fill up with tears. She loved the image of herself in an Army uniform and she loved what the movie had to say. [19] Private Benjamin also stars Eileen Brennan and Armand Assante and garnered Hawn her second Academy Award nomination, this time for Best Actress. [4] [20] Hawn's box office success continued with comedies like Seems Like Old Times (1980), written by Neil Simon; Best Friends (1982), written by Valerie Curtin and Barry Levinson; Protocol (1984), co-written by Nancy Meyers; Wildcats (1986)—Hawn also served as executive producer on the latter two; and the World War II romantic drama Swing Shift (1984). At the age of thirty-nine, Hawn posed for the cover of Playboy 's January 1985 issue and was the subject of the Playboy Interview. [21] Her last film of the 1980s was opposite partner Kurt Russell, for the third time, in the comedy Overboard (1987). 1990s [ edit] In 1990 she starred in the action comedy Bird on a Wire, a critically panned but commercially successful picture that paired Hawn with Mel Gibson. Hawn had mixed success in the early 1990s, with the thriller Deceived (1991), the drama CrissCross and opposite Bruce Willis and Meryl Streep in Death Becomes Her (both 1992). Earlier that year, she starred in Housesitter, a screwball comedy with Steve Martin, which was a commercial success. Hawn was absent from the screen for four years while caring for her mother who died of cancer in 1994. [4] Hawn made her entry back into film as producer of the satirical comedy Something to Talk About starring Julia Roberts and Dennis Quaid and made her directorial debut in the television film Hope (1997) starring Christine Lahti and Jena Malone. [4] Hawn returned to the screen again in 1996 as the aging, alcoholic actress Elise Elliot in the financially and critically successful The First Wives Club, opposite Bette Midler and Diane Keaton, with whom she covered the Lesley Gore hit " You Don't Own Me " for the film's soundtrack. Hawn also performed a cover version of the Beatles ' song, “ A Hard Day's Night ", on George Martin 's 1998 album, In My Life. She also starred in Woody Allen's musical Everyone Says I Love You (1996) and reunited with Steve Martin for the comedy The Out-of-Towners (1999), a remake of the 1970 Neil Simon hit. The film was critically panned and was not successful at the box office. [22] [23] In 1997, Hawn, along with her co-stars from The First Wives Club, Diane Keaton and Bette Midler, received the Women in Film Crystal Awards. [24] In 1999, she was awarded Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year. [25] 2000s [ edit] In 2001 Hawn was reunited with former co-stars Warren Beatty (her co-star in $ and Shampoo) and Diane Keaton for the comedy Town & Country, a critical and financial fiasco. Budgeted at an estimated US$90 million, the film opened to little notice and grossed only $7 million in its North American theatrical release. [26] In 2002, she starred in The Banger Sisters, opposite Susan Sarandon and Geoffrey Rush, her last live action film for fifteen years. In 2005 Hawn's autobiography, A Lotus Grows in the Mud, was published. 2010s [ edit] In 2013, Hawn guest-starred, along with Gordon Ramsay, in an episode of Phineas and Ferb, in which she provided the voice of neighbor Peggy McGee. [27] [28] In 2017, Hawn returned to the big screen for the first time since 2002, co-starring with Amy Schumer in the comedy Snatched, playing mother and daughter. [29] [30] [31] [32] In 2018, Hawn portrayed Mrs. Claus in the Netflix film The Christmas Chronicles. [33] Personal life [ edit] Hawn has studied meditation. In a 2012 interview, she stated, "I don't think of myself as a Buddhist. I was born Jewish, and I consider that my religion. " She also stated, "It's not the idea of a particular religion that's important; it's the development of a spiritual life. " [34] Hawn is a supporter of the LGBT community. Speaking on nations such as Nigeria and others which have criminalized gay people, she denounced these laws, stating, "This is man's inhumanity to man, of the first order. " [35] Relationships and family [ edit] Hawn's pre-fame boyfriends included actor Mark Goddard and Crooner Spiro Venduras. [36] Her first husband was dancer (later director) Gus Trikonis, who appeared as a Shark in West Side Story. They married on May 16, 1969 in Honolulu, Hawaii and separated on April 9, 1973. [37] [38] Hawn then dated stuntman Ted Grossman, [39] Swedish actor Bruno Wintzell [39] and Italian actor Franco Nero, [40] but did not file for divorce from Trikonis until New Year's Eve 1975, after becoming engaged to musician Bill Hudson of the Hudson Brothers, whom she met the previous summer on a first-class flight from New York to L. A. [41] Hawn was granted a divorce in June 1976 and married Hudson on July 3, 1976 in Takoma Park, Maryland. [42] They had two children, son Oliver (born September 7, 1976) and daughter Kate (born April 19, 1979). Hudson filed for divorce on August 15, 1980. [43] Hawn's next romances were with French actor Yves Rénier, [44] television star Tom Selleck [45] and Moroccan businessman Victor Drai. [46] The divorce from Hudson was finalized in March 1982. [47] Hawn has been in a relationship with actor Kurt Russell since Valentine's Day 1983. [48] The couple first met while filming The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band in 1966, but became involved after re-connecting on the set of Swing Shift. They have a son, Wyatt (born July 10, 1986). [49] Hawn is also the de facto stepmother of Russell and Season Hubley 's son Boston. In 2000 and again in 2004, news outlets reported that Hawn and Russell were on the verge of breaking up. [50] [51] [52] [53] During the alleged separations, Hawn was linked to newsman Charles Glass and Pakistani cricketer and politician Imran Khan. [54] [55] Hawn and Russell, who celebrated 35 years together in 2018, own homes in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; [56] Snowmass Village, Colorado; [57] Manhattan, New York; [58] Brentwood; [59] and Palm Desert, California. [60] The Hawn Foundation [ edit] In 2003 Hawn founded the Hawn Foundation, a non-profit organization which provides youth education programs intended to improve academic performance through "life-enhancing strategies for well-being". [61] [62] The Hawn Foundation has supported research studies conducted by external researchers to evaluate the effectiveness of its educational program for children, called MindUP. [2] According to his 2002 autobiography, he was physically and sexually abused during this time. [3] Price was a member of the breakdance crew Westside, based in the Whitmore Reans and Heath Town areas of Wolverhampton, in the 1980s. He later joined a breakdance crew called the Birmingham Bboys, and made his name as a graffiti artist in the West Midlands. His artwork around Birmingham and Wolverhampton was featured heavily in Dick Fontaine 's documentary Bombin'. He took part in the largest-ever British graffiti art battle alongside Bristol artist Robert "3D" Del Naja, who later formed Massive Attack. He is mentioned for his graffiti in the book Spraycan Art by Henry Chalfant and James Prigoff, which contains several examples of his art. He moved to the United States owing to graffiti projects, and also started selling grills (gold teeth jewellery) in New York and Miami; he continued this business after his return to the UK in 1988. [2] His nickname stems from "Goldielocks", an earlier nickname given to him during his Bboys days and subsequently shortened when he no longer wore dreadlocks. [2] Music [ edit] By 1991, Price had become fascinated by the British breakbeat music scene when his girlfriend, DJ Kemistry, introduced him to the pioneering jungle and drum and bass producers Dennis "Dego" McFarlane and Mark "Marc Mac" Clair, known as 4hero. [2] He went on to execute some design and A&R work for 4hero 's Reinforced Records label. In 1992, Price made his first appearance, by contributing to an EP by Icelandic group, Ajax Project. [4] For many years, the track was repeatedly misattributed to Price himself, perhaps because of his subsequent use of "Rufige" as moniker for his own releases. His releases Killa Muffin b/w Krisp Biscuit and the Dark Rider EP were released under the alias "Rufige Cru" on Reinforced. [5] His track "Terminator", released under the name "Metalheads" in 1992, [6] was a hit in the jungle scene and is noted for pioneering the use of time stretching. [7] In 1993, he released Angel, another 12" on the Synthetic Hardcore Phonography label. 1994 saw him setting up his own record label, Metalheadz. [5] Goldie next to a "Metalheadz" tattoo, 2001. His first studio album, Timeless, followed in 1995. Timeless entered the UK Albums Chart at number seven. [8] The album fused the breakbeats and basslines common in jungle with orchestral textures and soul vocals by Diane Charlemagne. The album's title track was a 21-minute symphonic piece. " Inner City Life ", a track from the album, reached number 39 in the UK Singles Chart. [8] Timeless helped to popularise drum and bass as a form of musical expression. [9] The music critic Simon Reynolds noted that Price's credentials as a musical innovator – and particularly as one of the key driving forces of innovation in the jungle/breakbeat scene – were exceptional. "Goldie revolutionised jungle not once but thrice", he noted in The Wire magazine, continuing, "First there was 'Terminator' (pioneering the use of time stretching), then 'Angel' (fusing Diane Charlemagne 's live vocal with David Byrne / Brian Eno samples to prove that hardcore could be more 'conventionally' musical), now there's 'Timeless', a 22-minute hardcore symphony. " [7] In 1996, he released the Toasted Both Sides Please remix of the Bush song " Swallowed ", which topped charts in the USA and Canada. [10] [11] [12] Price released his second album, Saturnz Return, in 1998. The album's opening track, "Mother", is an hour-long orchestral drum and bass piece. The album featured appearances by David Bowie, Noel Gallagher and KRS-One. The album met with mixed reviews. David Brown of Entertainment Weekly called the album "ambitious but monotonous and overlong — Pink Floyd with a gold tooth". [13] In 2002, Price said that he had been working for three years on a film called Sine Tempus, [14] described as a coming-of-age story of a young paintbrush artist. In 2006, he announced the soundtrack as his new album. [15] The album was released via the Metalheadz website in 2008, but the film has not been released. Price is known for his work as the leader of Rufige Kru. The group has no fixed members and has included drum and bass producers such as Technical Itch, Heist, Cujo, Agzilla Da Ice, Danny J, Doc Scott and Rob Playford. March 2013 saw the release of The Alchemist: The Best of Goldie 1992–2012, featuring prominent tracks from throughout Price's musical career. [16] A subsequent compilation, the three-CD Masterpiece set released by Ministry of Sound in 2014, brought together tracks that influenced him ( Soul II Soul 's "Back To Life", Roy Ayers ' "Everybody Loves The Sunshine") with cuts that soundtracked his entry into the rave scene and key moments from the drum'n'bass scene. [17] In 2017, the Goldie album The Journey Man was released, which Price described as his " magnum opus " and "the most important thing that I’ve ever made. " [3] Acting career [ edit] Price has appeared in Guy Ritchie 's Snatch and several other films, most notably the James Bond film, The World Is Not Enough. He also played gangster Angel Hudson in the British soap opera EastEnders (2001–2002). Price starred in Everybody Loves Sunshine (1999) (aka B. U. S. T. E. D. – United States title) with David Bowie. Television appearances [ edit] In the late 1980s, Price appeared on Central Weekend, a Friday evening topical debate show on Central TV, promoting graffiti as an art form. He had a small documentary made about his own art on Central TV's Here and Now programme featuring Pogus Caesar 's photographs of New York. He has appeared on various young people's TV shows as part of a breakdance crew, the Bboys from Wolverhampton. In 1995, he appeared on Passengers, and in a Channel 4 documentary about himself in 1998. His next TV appearance was hosting Crime Business on the digital TV channels Bravo and Ftn. He presented the documentary series The World's Deadliest Gangs on Bravo in 2002. Price appeared on the second series of Celebrity Big Brother in 2002. He was the first celebrity to be "evicted". In 2006, he was scheduled to appear in The Games, a UK reality TV show on Channel 4, but during training for the water-ski jump event he fractured his femur and was unable to take part in the show. He was replaced by Adam Rickitt. In 2009, he was reported to be suing the producers of the show for damages as a result of the injury. [18] During August and September 2008, the BBC broadcast Maestro, a reality television show in which eight celebrities, including Price, learned to conduct a concert orchestra. [3] Price was placed second, behind Sue Perkins. On 31 July 2009, the first of a two-part television programme Classic Goldie was broadcast, showing how in the wake of his success in the Maestro programme he learns to write a score for a large orchestra and choir. The resulting composition, commissioned by the BBC and entitled Sine Tempore ( Timeless), was performed at two children's Promenade concerts in the Royal Albert Hall on 1 and 2 August 2009, which featured music connected with Charles Darwin and the creation and evolution of the world. [19] He appeared on Celebrity Mastermind on 27 December 2009 and came fourth behind Paul O'Grady, Gail Emms and Loyd Grossman. On 11 September 2010, he was announced as part of the line-up in Strictly Come Dancing staying in the competition for two weeks. On 22 December 2010, he appeared in a Celebrity Come Dine with Me Christmas special. [20] On 26 March 2011, he appeared in a three-part reality television series, Goldie's Band: By Royal Appointment in which he led a group of music experts as they conducted a nationwide search for young talented musicians and then selected and coached 12 of them, who collaborated to create some musical pieces for a performance at Buckingham Palace. [21] On 24 August 2012, he appeared in the Channel 4 documentary Idris Elba's How Clubbing Changed the World (hosted by Idris Elba) to explain how he invented the revolutionary technique of time stretching by misusing an HF ultra-harmonizer, which is usually used for guitars. He then went on to say that when he crossed this with digital breakbeat, the sound evolved from jungle into drum and bass. In 2014, he appeared on the telethon BBC Children in Need. Art [ edit] In 2007, Price returned to the art world with an art exhibition, "Love Over Gold", which was held at the Leonard Street Gallery, London. [22] In 2008, he teamed up with Pete Tong to provide much of the artwork for Tong's new Wonderland club night at Eden nightclub in San Antonio, Ibiza. [23] There was an exhibition of Price's art in Berlin from the 13th to the 26th of June, 2008. [24] In April 2009, a retrospective exhibition titled "Kids Are All Riot" took place in Shoreditch, London, coinciding with the release of his screenprint "Apocalypse Angel". Around 2008, Price's art work was displayed on the London Underground by the arts company Art Below. [25] Personal life [ edit] In the early 1990s, Price had a relationship with drum and bass artist Kemistry, who died in a car accident in 1999. [26] He was romantically involved with singer Björk for several years until their break-up in September 1996. [5] Days later, an obsessed Björk fan named Ricardo López attempted to kill Björk due to his anger over the relationship and ultimately ended up killing himself. In 1998, he bought a country house in Bovingdon, Hertfordshire. [15] [27] In 2002, Hodder & Stoughton published his autobiography, Nine Lives, which he wrote with Paul Gorman. Price married model Sonjia Ashby in 2002. [28] They divorced in 2005. [15] As of 2003, he had five children. [27] In 2007, Price began a relationship with Mika Wassenaar, a Canadian. The couple appeared in the 20 June 2009 episode of ITV's All Star Mr and Mrs with Phillip Schofield and Fern Britton. Mika and Price married in 2010. [29] On 29th April 2010, Price opened the William Tyndale Primary School Sports Pitch in Islington, London. [30] In July 2010, Price received an honorary doctorate in Social Sciences from Brunel University, Uxbridge. [31] On 3 September 2010, he received an honorary degree of Doctor of Design from the University of Wolverhampton. [32] On 7 September 2010, Price's 23-year-old son Jamie Price was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum sentence of 21 years, for murder. He was convicted of stabbing a rival gang member to death in Wolverhampton town centre on 24 August 2008. [33] As of 2017, Price and his wife were living in Thailand, having moved there in 2015. [3] Price was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2016 New Year Honours awards, for services to music and young people. [34] In May 2017, he endorsed Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn in the 2017 UK general election. He told NME: "I'm definitely a massive Corbyn fan, yeah. " He added: "We had it in the '90s, this is the same thing. " [35] Price was accused of assaulting a security guard at the 2017 Glastonbury festival after the guard had refused to let Price's daughter, Chance, backstage; Price later emailed a response which read, "Yep, guilty as charged", but in March 2018, district judge Lynn Matthews at Bristol Magistrates' Court rejected Price's emailed response and in a video call Price later admitted to assault by beating. [36] On 30 May Bristol Magistrates' Court ordered Goldie to pay almost £2, 500 as a fine. [37] In 2017, Price appeared to reveal the first name of pseudonymous graffiti artist Banksy as "Rob" on Scroobius Pip 's weekly Distraction Pieces podcast. When discussing the rise of commercialism in street art, Price said, "Give me a bubble letter and put it on a T-shirt and write Banksy on it and we're sorted. We can sell it now... No disrespect to Rob, I think he is a brilliant artist. I think he has flipped the world of art over. In unserer Rallye steckt einfach Herzblut! Mai 2015! ".

When i first heard this song & that it was Goldie, I thought they meant it was Goldie with the Gold Teeth Rapper bloke! Ha. The first superstar produced by the breakbeat jungle movement, Goldie popularized drum'n'bass as a form of musical expression just as relevant for living-room contemplation as techno had become by the early '90s. Though he hardly developed the style, and his later reliance on engineers like Rob Playford and Optical to capture his sound puts into question his true musical importance, Goldie became one of the first personalities in British dance music, his gold teeth and b-boy attitude placing him leagues away from the faceless bedroom boffins who had become the norm in intelligent dance music. For the first time, England had a beat maestro and tough-guy head who could match the scores of larger-than-life hip-hop stars America had produced, and the high profile of drum'n'bass as the first indigenously British dance music made Goldie a figure of prime importance. After spending several years working on his production skills at Reinforced Records (the home of 4hero), he founded Metalheadz Records, which released seminal dark yet intelligent singles by Source Direct, Photek, J. Majik, Optical, Lemon D, Wax Doctor, and Peshay, among others. In 1995, Goldie released Timeless, one of jungle's first and best full-length works of art. The album put him squarely at the top of the drum'n'bass heap -- at least in the minds of critics and mainstream listeners -- though his follow-up, SaturnzReturn, displayed an ambitious, personal side of Goldie hardly in keeping with jungle's producer mentality. A native of Walsall, England, Goldie was born to a Scottish-Jamaican couple and put up for adoption. He bounced around child-care homes and several sets of foster parents during his childhood years, and became fascinated with the rise of hip-hop, breakdancing, and graffiti art. By 1986, he was involved with breakdancing crews around his home of Wolverhampton; after making several trips to London for all-day breakdancing events (and to see hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa), Goldie appeared in the English documentary on graffiti art called Bombing. He also spent time in New York and Miami (working in a market stall selling customized gold teeth), but returned to England by 1988. For a time, Goldie worked at the Try 1 shop in Walsall (also selling gold teeth), then moved to London. He began hanging out with two fellow heads from the British hip-hop scene, Nellee Hooper and 3-D (later of Massive Attack), and by 1991 he'd been introduced to the breakbeat culture that birthed jungle; at the seminal club night Rage, DJs Grooverider and Fabio pitched ancient breakbeats up to 45 rpm, blending their creations with the popular rave music of the time. Goldie was hooked on the sound of raw breakbeat techno, and he gradually switched his allegiance to jungle from the British hip-hop scene that later generated trip-hop. Through his girlfriend DJ Kemistry (later to make her name with the mixing duo Kemistry & Storm), Goldie hooked up with Dego and Mark Mac, two of the most influential figures in the emerging drum'n'bass scene. The duo's Reinforced Records and recordings as 4hero were fostering an increasingly artistic attitude to the music, and Goldie learned much about breakbeat production and engineering at their studios. He recorded his first single as Ajax Project, then debuted on Reinforced as Metalheadz with two 1992 singles, "Killermuffin" and "Menace. " The 1993 single "Terminator" broke him into the jungle scene -- besides pioneering the crucial jungle concept of time-stretching (basically extending a sample without altering its pitch) the single evinced the growing separation between the uplifting rave scene and its emerging dark side, reliant on breakbeats and restless vibes. The name was later taken for his influential Metalheadz Records, which released material from a legion of crucial jungle artists: Photek, Doc Scott, Dillinja, Source Direct, Peshay, J Majik, Alex Reece, Lemon D, and Optical, among others. Later singles such as "Angel" and remixes for 4hero's Reinforced label spread Goldie's fame, and in 1995 he signed a contract with London Records. His first major-label single was "Timeless, " and his debut album of the same name followed in August 1995. He gained additional fame in early 1996, when an American tour supporting Björk sparked a relationship between the two and led to a brief engagement period before they called off a wedding. Goldie resurfaced in 1998 with a high-profile follow-up, SaturnzReturn, an epic two-disc set including one track, "Mother, " that in itself broke the 70-minute barrier. The album tanked with critics and fans, leading to a return to the underground later that year with the Ring of Saturn EP. Save for a handful of mix albums (most notably 2011's Fabriclive 58), two studio efforts credited to Rufige Kru (2007's Malice in Wonderland and 2009's Memoirs of an Afterlife), and Sine Tempus, the 2008 soundtrack to an unreleased film directed by the man himself, Goldie's career over the next two decades became less and less music-focused. He turned his hand to acting, appearing in Guy Ritchie's Snatch, the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough, and the perennial BBC soap opera Eastenders. He also appeared on a number of reality TV shows, including Maestro, where he learned how to conduct a symphony orchestra, and Goldie's Band: By Royal Appointment, where he put together a band of unknowns to perform at Buckingham Palace. He was awarded an MBE on the Queen's 2016 Honours list for services to music and young people. A career-spanning compilation, The Alchemist, was released by Rhino in 2013. Goldie's third solo studio album and first in nearly two decades, entitled The Journey Man, came out in 2017 through Cooking Vinyl. Guest vocalists on the album included Terri Walker, Naomi Pryor, José James, and Natalie Duncan, whom he had discovered while making Goldie's Band TV show.,, Facebook, SoundCloud, Twitter, Bookogs, YouTube,,, Wikipedia, Posterogs, Filmogs.

Aaron Fisher. . Synopsis=College film student Benjamin Glass (played by writer-director Aaron Fisher) has it all: ADHD, OCD, borderline personality. And he's also bipolar. But Glass is more than his diagnoses - he prefers the term "recklessly extravagant" -- and he's determined to prove his genius. When a misunderstanding threatens to expel him from college, Glass pushes back; he plans on recreating the incident on video, with the help of a moonlighting porn actress (Ellen Toland), to clear his name. But how will he raise the money for the film, when his parents dismiss the scheme as another manic episode? Inside the Rain is a wincingly funny rom-com-drama, anchored by off-kilter performances by co-stars Fisher and Toland. The colorful ensemble cast includes Rosie Perez as a tough love shrink, Eric Roberts as an unhinged film producer, and Catherine Curtin and Paul Schulze as the long-suffering parents. The ultimate underdog film and proof that if you believe in yourself, anything is possible. 2020. runtime=1Hour 30 minutes.

INSIDE thérain. INSIDE the rings online. College student Benjamin Glass (played by writer-director Aaron Fisher) has it all: obsessive compulsive, borderline personality - and bipolar disorder. But Glass is more than his diagnoses – he prefers the term “recklessly extravagant”. and hes determined to prove his genius. When a misunderstanding threatens to expel him, Glass plans on recreating the incident on video with the help of a moonlighting sex worker (Ellen Toland) to clear his name. “Inside the Rain” is a wincingly funny rom-com-drama, anchored by off-kilter performances by co-stars Fisher and Toland with a colorful ensemble cast including Rosie Perez and Eric Roberts. The ultimate underdog film and proof that if you believe in yourself, anything is possible.

INSIDE THE rain forest. There are periods in our lives where we get inspired or even feel the need and desire to tell a story, sometimes without even knowing what that story exactly is. For Aaron Fisher, this sentiment rang true in an extreme way. Living with bipolar disorder, Fisher is used to feeling intense emotions and motivations, and when he set out to write his first feature film “Inside the Rain” (which he also starred in and directed) he needed to find a way to tell that story while also working on one of the hardest challenges someone can go through. figuring out yourself. “Inside the Rain” follows the story of Ben (Aaron Fisher) who suffers from an array of mental illnesses including bipolar disorder. When Ben is kicked out of school, he falls into a spiral of depression and then finds determination to clear his name. Throughout the process, he meets the beautiful and outrageous Emma (Ellen Toland) and together, the two work together to prove Bens innocence, while also growing closer in the adventurous process. Fisher sat down with Metro to discuss the film, his inspirations and why it took some time for him to figure out exactly what story he needed to tell. What first inspired you to write this film? Its a complicated answer because when I set out to make this movie, the first thing I wanted to do was to make a film that was like “The Graduate. ” At that time, I was feeling a lot like Benjamin Braddock, but while writing, it became more and more autobiographical. I originally thought I could write a feature film in a few months, and it turned out to take four years. After the first three or four months of writing the film, I was actually bummed out because I thought the script was bad and a bit of a cliche. It was more like there was perspiration than inspiration. I got so depressed actually that I voluntarily checked myself into a psych ward, which was not fun at all. After I got out of the psych ward, the basic idea of the student having a hearing at his school came up to me, and it sort of started going from there. if there was any sort of eureka moment, it was that. How do you balance directing and acting in the film as well? As an actor in a scene, Im not analyzing my scene partners performance. Because if I do, Im no longer playing the part, Im then a director looking and analyzing someone else and that would just take me out of the scene and put me in my own head when I should be in the moment and spontaneous. I would look at playback on set though to see if I actually liked the take from the cameras point of view. That in itself can be tricky, because when you watch yourself act on-screen, especially if you just did it, you just have such a negative view of everything that you did. I think a lot of actors are like that, they cant watch themselves on-screen. As far as directing, I rehearsed a lot of scenes with my acting coach and teacher, so we were getting a lot of feedback from him. We rehearsed way before we were on set, thats unusual to have that. With some of the stars though, we werent able to make that happen, but like with Ellen Toland, we started rehearsing two or three weeks before shooting and that was really fun. I also feel like Im directing beforehand with scenes. Rosie Perez asked me a lot of questions before we did scenes about how I wanted the scene to fit into the movie. just very insightful questions. I was happy that she did that. I also relied on a sixth sense to tell if the scene was going well or if it was going bad. But that was really just based on instinct and past experience. The term ‘recklessly extravagant is used a lot to describe Ben, why was that phrase an important part of the story? As someone who is bi-polar and who has manic episodes, I view the manic episodes as being recklessly extravagant. When youre spending money, youre spending all of your money or when youre dating, youre all in. Everything is just to the most extreme extent. It tied into the story that Ben tells about Odysseus as well. When he sleeps, he sleeps for ten days and when he has sex, he has sex with the best sex goddesses. I was tying things together, with screenwriting there is a lot of payoff. you plant things early on and there is payoff later. Since the script is loosely autobiographical, it just tied in that way and became more organic. When I was writing the script, I was struggling with how to write about the most painful and traumatic experiences in my life. That was scary, but I did it because of the story. I didnt set out to make it autobiographical, in fact, I tried really hard not to. I just knew I had a story to tell and thats what it felt like and where it went. Overall, what do you hope audiences take away from the film? Theres the main theme in the movie which is being inside the rain and that image. I saw the rain as being a situation where youre soaked in the rain and miserable, or you could be in that same situation and it can be euphoric because youre just excited to be there. For me, that was a metaphor for being bipolar. People get normal depression by something thats happening to them, with bipolar depression, its literally just chemical imbalances in the brain. People were asking me whats going on, and theres nothing going on, Im just miserable. I saw the rain as that situation, and I got the rain image from the Bob Dylan song “Just Like a Woman” and the line “Nobody feels any pain tonight as I stand inside the rain. ” I heard that and I thought, ‘Thats the image, thats the climactic scene. I just decided it then and there. The rain is also the tears Ben wanted to cry but couldnt. Its very personally meaningful for me. With bipolar disorder, you could be really happy or really miserable, given the exact same circumstances. But I also want the film to be open to interpretation as I think all art should be. I want people who are not bipolar or who dont have a mental illness to be able to relate to the story. They can interpret it for themselves. Inside the Rain Synopsis Facing expulsion from college over a misunderstanding, a bipolar student indulges his misery at a strip club where he befriends a gorgeous, intelligent, outrageous woman and they hatch a madcap scheme to prove his innocence. Popular reviews More Inside the Rain is a really funny, sweet film that challenges a lot of stigmas—against people with bipolar disorder, against sex workers, and against poor people trying to raise money for their films through crowdfunding. Throughout this film, I realized the main character's goals are not going to lead anywhere, but at the same time, I found myself drawn into rooting for his success while simultaneously criticizing its ridiculousness. The film was strong overall, but the portrayal of the characters was definitely one of the best qualities. All of the actors played their roles with incredible talent, and it felt like the roles were written for the actors playing them. Technically and cinematographically as well, the film is beautiful. A few cuts wowed me with the visual connections, and how the shots in general were framed was great. 4/4 An intriguing coming of age story as seen thru bipolar eyes. I really dont know what to say about this film honestly. Its interesting for sure. Recent reviews Popular Lists More.

The rise of media streaming has caused the downfall of many DVD rental companies such as Blockbuster. In July 2015 an article from the New York Times published an article about Netflixs DVD services. It stated that Netflix is continuing their DVD services with 5. 3 million subscribers, which is a significant drop from the previous year. On the other hand, their streaming services have 65 million members. In a March 2016 study assessing the “Impact of Movie Streaming over traditional DVD Movie Rental” it was found that respondents do not purchase DVD movies nearly as much anymore, if ever, as streaming has taken over the market. Watch Movie The Assistant, viewers did not find movie quality to be significantly different between DVD and online streaming. Issues that respondents believed needed improvement with movie streaming included functions of fast forwarding or rewinding, as well as search functions. The article highlights that the quality of movie streaming as an industry will only increase in time, as advertising revenue continues to soar on a yearly basis throughout the industry, providing incentive for quality content production. 19 Watch The Assistant Movie Online Blu-ray or Bluray rips are encoded directly from the Blu-ray disc to 1080p or 720p (depending on disc source) and use the x264 codec. Hvíter Hvíter Dager, Iceland's Oscar entry for Best Foreign Film this year, is a quiet, mature look at grief and memory. It is about a man who carries within him a love so pure, he struggles to understand anything else. It is about refusing to let go of the version of someone you want to hold onto forever.
The narrative slowly unravels like a novel as themes are explored through nuance and metaphor. The delicate dealing with love lost recalls Lee Chang-dong's Secret Sunshine and Céline Sciamma's Portrait de La Jeune Fille en Feu, regarding the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The cinematography, shot in a noticeably textured 35mm, is peculiar in the way it involves the setting and keeps us a certain physical distance from the characters. I think Michael Haneke would be proud of this film.
The central character Ingimunder's relationship with his granddaughter Salka serves the film in predictable but endearing ways. Strong child acting is often taken for granted, but Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir's performance is far from typical. It is also a testament to both fine direction (Hlynur Palmason) and strong casting because the two leads are almost irreplaceable and truly contribute to make the film something special.
A White, White Day is enriched by its simplicity and singularity as it takes on heavy themes. The characters are real, the story is thoughtfully restrained, and the ending is remarkable. One of the more memorable films of the year.

Bill Cunningham New York is distributed by Zeitgeist Films and was released in theaters on March 16, 2011. Living in a tiny corner studio apartment in the fabled Carnegie Hall Studio apartments, New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham sleeps on a makeshift bed among his beloved file cabinets. Within are thousands of negatives of Cunninghamâs shots capturing fashion-forward individuals on the streets of New York, Paris, and Milan. Usually on his Schwinn bike, traversing Manhattan from tip to tip, Cunningham looks for the street fashionistas who bring the pages of glossy magazines to life. Sadly, we learn little about Cunningham, who seems to prefer his anonymity.

October 12, 2018 6:50PM PT The celebrated New York Times on-the-street fashion photographer gets a documentary portrait that movingly captures what made him unique. In “ The Times of Bill Cunningham, ” the late New York Times fashion photographer Bill Cunningham appears before us as a blissed-out aging choirboy. He sits in his small apartment, surrounded by file cabinets jammed with his work, a geek in his element, with a shock of gray hair and two jutting front teeth that give him a big rabbity smile so eager its giddy — and the thing is, he means it. That antic grin lights up the room. “The Times of Bill Cunningham” is the second documentary to be made about the Times legendary on-the-street photographer and shutterbug of society, and it contains a revealing story about the first, “Bill Cunningham New York. ” That film was released in 2011, when Cunningham was in his early eighties (he died in 2016) and it was a profile made with his ardent approval and cooperation. So youd assume that he might have wanted to attend the New York premiere of it. But no. He skipped the premiere, and for good measure never bothered to see the movie. Instead, when the early spring evening that should have been his red-carpet moment was happening, Cunningham was out doing what he always did: gliding through the New York streets on his trademark bicycle, looking for ordinary people to photograph — and not-so-ordinary people, though the beauty of Cunninghams work is that he never made the distinction. He didnt see it, so he didnt make it. In one of his typical Sunday photo collages, you might encounter five different images of women on the street, each photographed wearing the same dress, all looking quite different in it, next to a shot of a celebrity strolling along in that same dress. But youd always have to do a double take before you said, “Oh, look, its Claire Danes, ” because Cunningham lent each figure the graceful mystery and radiance of a celebrity. On his weekly page, everybody was a star. Cunningham himself became a star, though only reluctantly, in the most head-ducking and self-effacing way. He thrived on being behind the camera and behind the scenes, as he had since the 1940s, when he arrived in New York from his native Boston to work at Bonwit Teller. Theres now a full-scale genre of fashion-world documentaries, a category that found its commercial niche around a decade ago, with the release of “Valentino: The Last Emperor. ” But something that has struck me over the last year is that theres a special, intoxicating quality to movies that excavate the fashion demimonde prior to the 1960s — in other words, the “Phantom Thread” era or before. It might be Warhol doing his shoe drawings in the 50s, or Cecil Beaton inventing the 30s fairy-tale kingdom according to Vogue, or (in this case) Bill Cunningham, a sharply grinning young man of the most innocent flamboyance, from a conservative working-class Irish Catholic family, coming to New York and deciding to become a milliner, all because he thought that womens hats could be like something out of a dream. “The Times of Bill Cunningham” is built around an extended interview Cunningham gave in 1994 to a reporter named Mark Bozek (whos the director of the film. The interview was supposed to be 10 minutes long, but Cunningham, then 65, just kept talking. He was one of those lucky individuals whod discovered the secret of a happy existence: If you love what you do and do what you love, youll never work a day in your life. The Cunningham we meet took this ethos to a purified Buddhist extreme. He went out to shoot pictures every day, reveling in the discovery of each moment, and he got invited to some very fancy parties, but apart from that he led a spartan existence. In the 50s, he moved into one of the fabled studios above Carnegie Hall and occupied that privileged but monastic space until the day he died. It was like a highbrow version of the Chelsea Hotel, and we hear great stories about how Marlon Brando, who also had a studio there, would hide out in Cunninghams to get away from all the girls who were mobbing him, or how Cunningham rubbed shoulders with figures from Martha Graham to a naked house-guesting Norman Mailer. Cunningham speaks neurotically quickly, still with a trace of his Boston accent, and the quality he communicates is an openness to any inspiration. The secret of his photography, he says, wasnt aesthetic talent; it was closer to having a detectives eye. Thats why, on the sidewalk, he was always able to spot people like Boy George or — in a historic moment — the aging reclusive Greta Garbo, who hadnt been photographed for decades. He was a man of the moment. When Bozek asks Cunningham, late in the film, if he is ever sad about anything, without saying a word he puts his head down and silently begins to weep. Just like that. A little later, he tells us that hes thinking of all the friends he lost to AIDS. Cunningham found a place in the fashion world, working for the designers who dressed Jackie Kennedy, but it wasnt until someone gave him a camera that he found his calling. He had the talent to be a designer, but by temperament he was an observer. He first demonstrated that in his fashion-world commentary for Womens Wear Daily, which read like gossip written by someone without a catty bone in his body; it was dish served by a man who loved life. He preserved that voice in the short passages he wrote alongside the weekly street gallery that became one of the most popular and iconic destinations in the Sunday New York Times. The movie is filled with his images, many never published in the Times, and you can feel the pleasure he took in shooting each one of them. “The Times of Bill Cunningham” is only 74 minutes long, yet its a snapshot of a life that leaves you grateful for having encountered it. Cunningham insists he wasnt an artist, and in a way the movie recognizes that he was right. He was a natural photographer who anticipated the digital era, but his gift wasnt so much for crafting impeccable images. It was a talent for living that he expressed through his lens. He was a reporter who forged his own unique beat: the beauty of other people. Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh take center stage in the new “Black Widow” trailer that dropped at the 54th Super Bowl. Details are scarce on the next Marvel movie, directed by Cate Shortland, but new footage shows Black Widows life before she was an Avenger. Diving into the back story of Johanssons character Natasha Romanoff. Tom Cruise has made an enemy in the newest “Top Gun: Maverick” trailer, which premiered during the 54th annual Super Bowl on Sunday. “My Dad believed in you, Im not going to make the same mistake, ” says Miles Teller who is playing Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, son of Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, deceased wingman to Cruises character. The Sundance Film Festival is fighting a battle thats been building for several years, and what its fighting for can be summed up in one word: relevance. What makes a Sundance movie relevant? In a sense, the old criteria still hold. Its some combination of box-office performance, awards cachet, and that buzzy, you-know-it-when-you-see-it thing of. When Tim Bell died in London last summer, the media response was largely, somewhat sheepishly, polite: It was hard not to envision the ruthless political spin doctor still massaging his legacy from beyond the grave. “Irrepressible” was the first adjective chosen in the New York Times obituary. “He had far too few scruples about who he. After three weeks in theaters, Sonys “Bad Boys for Life” is officially the highest-grossing installment in the action-comedy series. The Times of bill pay. Bill Cunningham, who turned fashion photography into his own branch of cultural anthropology on the streets of New York, chronicling an eras ever-changing social scene for The New York Times by training his busily observant lens on what people wore — stylishly, flamboyantly or just plain sensibly — died on Saturday in Manhattan. He was 87. His death was confirmed by The Times. He had been hospitalized recently after having a stroke. Mr. Cunningham was such a singular presence in the city that, in 2009, he was designated a living landmark. And he was an easy one to spot, riding his bicycle through Midtown, where he did most of his field work: his bony-thin frame draped in his utilitarian blue French workers jacket, khaki pants and black sneakers (he himself was no ones idea of a fashion plate) with his 35-millimeter camera slung around his neck, ever at the ready for the next fashion statement to come around the corner. Nothing escaped his notice: not the fanny packs, not the Birkin bags, not the gingham shirts, not the fluorescent biker shorts. In his nearly 40 years working for The Times, Mr. Cunningham snapped away at changing dress habits to chart the broader shift away from formality and toward something more diffuse and individualistic. At the Pierre hotel on the East Side of Manhattan, he pointed his camera at tweed-wearing blue-blood New Yorkers with names like Rockefeller and Vanderbilt. Downtown, by the piers, he clicked away at crop-top-wearing Voguers. Up in Harlem, he jumped off his bicycle — he rode more than 30 over the years, replacing one after another as they were wrecked or stolen — for B-boys in low-slung jeans. In the process, he turned into something of a celebrity himself. In 2008, Mr. Cunningham went to Paris, where the French government bestowed the Legion of Honor on him. In New York, he was celebrated at Bergdorf Goodman, where a life-size mannequin of him was installed in the window. It was the New York Landmarks Conservancy that made him a living landmark in 2009, the same year The New Yorker, in a profile, described his On the Street and Evening Hours columns as the citys unofficial yearbook: “an exuberant, sometimes retroactively embarrassing chronicle of the way we looked. ” In 2010, a documentary, “ Bill Cunningham New York, ” premiered at the Museum of Modern Art to glowing reviews. Yet Mr. Cunningham told nearly anyone who asked about it that the attendant publicity was a total hassle, a reason for strangers to approach and bother him. He wanted to find subjects, not be the subject. He wanted to observe, rather than be observed. Asceticism was a hallmark of his brand. He didnt go to the movies. He didnt own a television. He ate breakfast nearly every day at the Stage Star Deli on West 55th Street, where a cup of coffee and a sausage, egg and cheese could be had, until very recently, for under 3. He lived until 2010 in a studio above Carnegie Hall amid rows and rows of file cabinets, where he kept all of his negatives. He slept on a single-size cot, showered in a shared bathroom and, when he was asked why he spent years ripping up checks from magazines like Details (which he helped Annie Flanders launch in 1982) he said: “Moneys the cheapest thing. Liberty and freedom is the most expensive. ” Although he sometimes photographed upward of 20 gala events a week, he never sat down for dinner at any of them and would wave away people who walked up to him to inquire whether he would at least like a glass of water. Instead, he stood off to the side photographing women like Annette de la Renta and Mercedes Bass in their beaded gowns and tweed suits. As Anna Wintour put it in the documentary about Mr. Cunningham, “Ive said many times, ‘We all get dressed for Bill. ” Mr. Cunninghams position as a perennial outsider among a set of consummate insiders was part of what made him uniquely well suited to The Times. “His company was sought after by the fashion worlds rich and powerful, yet he remained one of the kindest, most gentle and humble people I have ever met, ” said Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., The Timess publisher and chairman. “We have lost a legend, and I am personally heartbroken to have lost a friend. ” Dean Baquet, The Timess executive editor, said: “He was a hugely ethical journalist. And he was incredibly open-minded about fashion. To see a Bill Cunningham street spread was to see all of New York. Young people. Brown people. People who spent fortunes on fashion and people who just had a strut and knew how to put an outfit together out of what they had and what they found. ” Michele McNally, The Timess director of photography, said: “Bill was an extraordinary man, his commitment and passion unparalleled, his gentleness and humility inspirational. Even though his talents were very well known, he preferred to be anonymous, something unachievable for such a superstar. I will miss him every day. ” Mr. Cunningham particularly loved eccentrics, whom he collected like precious seashells. Image Credit. Bill Cunningham One was Shail Upadhya, whose work as a Nepalese diplomat is perhaps less memorable than his penchant for polka dots, Pucci prints and other assorted peculiarities, like a self-designed floral-print coat made from his retired sofa. Another was Iris Apfel, a Palm Beach socialite who became the subject of Albert Maysless last documentary film only after Mr. Cunningham took pictures of her on the street in her shiny black saucerlike glasses and chunky costume jewelry. “Bill photographed me before anyone knew who I was, ” Ms. Apfel said. “At 94, Ive become a cover girl, and he was very largely responsible for my ultimate success. Cunninghams most frequent observation spot during the day was Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, where he became as much a part of the scenery as Tiffany & Company. His camera clicked constantly as he spotted fashions and moved with gazelle-like speed to record his subjects at just the right angle. “Everyone knew to leave him alone when he saw a sneaker he liked or a dress that caught his eye, ” said Harold Koda, the former curator in charge at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Costume Institute. “Because if you were in the way of someone he wanted to photograph, ” said Kim Hastreiter, the editor of Paper magazine and a friend of Mr. Cunninghams, “he would climb over you to get it. He was like a war photographer that way, except that what he was photographing were clothes. Cunningham himself once said: “When Im photographing, I look for the personal style with which something is worn — sometimes even how an umbrella is carried or how a coat is held closed. At parties, its important to be almost invisible, to catch people when theyre oblivious to the camera — to get the intensity of their speech, the gestures of their hands. Im interested in capturing a moment with animation and spirit. ” His survivors include several nieces and nephews. William John Cunningham Jr. was born on March 13, 1929, in Boston, the second of four children in an Irish Catholic family. In middle school, he used bits of material he got from a dime store to put together hats, one of which he gave to his mother to wear to the New York Worlds Fair in 1939. “She never wore it, ” Mr. Cunningham once said. “My family all thought I was a little nuts. ” As a teenager, he got a part-time job at the department store Bonwit Teller, then received a scholarship to Harvard, only to drop out after two months. “They thought I was an illiterate, ” he said. “I was hopeless, but I was a visual person. ” With nothing to do in Boston and his parents pressuring him to find some direction, he moved to New York, where he took a room with an uncle, Tom Harrington, who had an ownership stake in an advertising agency. “My family thought they could indoctrinate me in that business, that living with my uncle it would brush off, ” Mr. Cunningham said. “But it didnt work. I had always been interested in fashion. ” So when Mr. Harrington issued his nephew an ultimatum — “Quit making hats or get out of my apartment” — Mr. Cunningham chose the latter, relocating to a ground-floor apartment on East 52nd Street that doubled as a showroom for his fox-edged fedoras and zebra-stenciled toques. To make extra money, Mr. Cunningham began freelancing for Womens Wear Daily, then quit sometime in the early 1960s after getting into a feud with its publisher, John Fairchild, over who was a better designer: André Courrèges or Yves Saint Laurent. “John killed my story, ” Mr. Cunningham later recalled. “He said, ‘No, no, Saint Laurent is the one. And that was it for me. When they wouldnt publish the Courrèges article the way I saw it, I left. ” By then, feminism was on the ascent, and bell-bottoms paired with flouncy tops were replacing pink suits and pillbox hats. To Mr. Cunningham, it was becoming clear that his days as a milliner were numbered. Video transcript transcript Bill Cunningham, N. Y. Around 1967, he got his first camera and used it to take pictures of the “Summer of Love, ” when he realized the action was out on the street. He started taking assignments for The Daily News and The Chicago Tribune, and he became a regular contributor to The Times in the late 1970s. Over the next two decades, he declined repeated efforts by his editors to get him to take a staff position. “Once people own you, ” he would say, “they can tell you what to do. So dont let em. ” That changed in 1994, after Mr. Cunningham was hit by a truck while riding his bicycle. Explaining why he had finally accepted The Timess offer, he said, “It was a matter of health insurance. ” Occasionally, Mr. Cunningham allowed people to celebrate him in one way or another. For example, in 1993, he was honored by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and biked onto the stage to accept his award. But that was largely out of character. Later on, Mr. Koda approached him to see if he would be interested in curating a retrospective of his pictures at the Met. Cunningham turned him down. “He said to me, ‘I have a job I love, ” Mr. Koda recalled. “He thought it would be a diversion. He did what he loved, and what he loved is documenting this very ephemeral world. ” Perhaps unsurprisingly, Mr. Cunningham was a reluctant participant in his own documentary. According to its director, Richard Press, Mr. Cunningham would agree to be interviewed, then spend months canceling or postponing shoots. Cunningham said until his death that he had not seen the film. “We tried to get him to go to the opening, ” Mr. Press said. “He just said: ‘Oh, kids, you made a movie. Im too busy. He came to our opening-night party and he photographed it. He put the directors from the festival in his column, but he didnt even say why they were there or what they were celebrating. Cunningham also resisted the trends of celebrity dressing. He had seen actresses in their fishtail dresses preening and posing before the phalanxes of photographers at ceremonies like the Golden Globes and the Oscars. They were poised. They looked pretty. Yet he could not muster enthusiasm for them. It wasnt simply that he was nostalgic for another time, back when famous women like Lauren Bacall and Brooke Astor actually dressed themselves. That era may have held a certain appeal for him, but even when he was in his 70s and 80s, he still had plenty of subjects he loved to shoot. One was Louise Doktor, an administrative assistant at a New York holding company who had a coat with four sleeves and a handbag made from a soccer ball. Another was Andre J., a bearded man with a taste for off-the-shoulder, 70s-inspired dresses. “He had people who recurred in his columns, ” Mr. Koda said. “Most of them were not famous. They were working people he was interested in. His thing was personal style. Cunningham put it this way in an essay he wrote for The Times in 2002: “Fashion is as vital and as interesting today as ever. I know what people with a more formal attitude mean when they say theyre horrified by what they see on the street. But fashion is doing its job. Its mirroring exactly our times. ”.

Beneath the concave cheekbones, the magical handguns with infinite bullet capacity, and the byzantine criminal underworld that stretches to every corner of the globe, hes just a monosyllabic middle-aged man who wants to be left the fuck alone. When the first movie of this increasingly ridiculous saga began, Mr. Wick was grieving his wifes death in peace—then some Russian mobsters made the mistake of killing his dog (her name was Daisy, and she was very cute. This aggression, unknowingly committed against a man so dangerous that he used to be known as “Baba Yaga, ” forced John back into the network of contract killers hed once left behind. And ever since the shadowy crime lords of the High Table sniffed blood, they havent lost the scent or minded their own business. At the end of “John Wick: Chapter 2, ” our laconic hero committed a big no-no by shooting a pest on the consecrated grounds of the Continental Hotel, but desperate times call for desperate measures, and every New Yorker knows what its like when the world gets a bit too close for comfort. Giddy, exhausting, and breathtakingly violent, “The Times of Bill Cunningham” begins a few seconds after the previous installment left off, with the excommunicated assassin trying to make the most of the hour-long headstart hes been given to hide before the 14 million bounty on his head is triggered and the entire criminal underworld comes after him. Of course, anyone whos seen the previous films in this unexpected franchise knows that its criminal underworld is more of an overworld, and that almost every featured extra? —? from street vendors and waiters to dog-walkers and homeless people? —? is a heat-packing hired gun who uses their role in the capitalist system as a disguise for their deeper allegiance to a veiled society that operates on an ancient market of codes and blood oaths. Now that Mr. Wick is square in the middle of all of those crosshairs, its become comically impossible for the deathless widower to find the solace he seeks. Hes a target, and it seems like the entire world has its finger on the trigger; he used to be anonymous, but now hes a celebrity. In its most enjoyably demented moments, “Parabellum” is nothing short of a non-stop metaphor for being famous. Less artful but more concussive than its immediate predecessor, this latest outing finds Mr. Wick being clocked by strangers every time he enters a room, stalked by his biggest fans, and so desperate for someone who will treat him like an actual human being that he travels all the way to the Sahara Desert to find them. Everyone in the world knows him by name, New York City is the only place on Earth he can hide in plain sight, and the perks of his job dont seem to compare with the harassment that comes with them. As Wick stumbles through the wet neon streets of Times Square—returning us to a surprisingly involved film world that flows like “The Raid” and looks like a hyper-saturated Instagram feed? —? its hard not to think of Reeves recent experience on a malfunctioning airplane, and how even that death-defying ordeal was turned into a viral moment (to the actors mild chagrin. Reeves once said that Wick was 40% him, but that number seems to have crept up a bit this time around. No movie has ever expressed the fight for anonymity with such viscerally literal force. True to the serialized nature of its title, “The Times of Bill Cunningham” starts in media res and ends on a cliffhanger. For an 131-minute film that devotes roughly 110 minutes of its runtime to people shooting each other in the head at close range, it would be almost impossible to follow for someone who isnt up to speed. Still, the gist of the plot is pretty simple: John Wick kills a lot of people. Like, a lot of people. By the end of “Parabellum, ” hes basically the leading cause of death in henchmen between the ages of 25 and 50. More of a one-man massacre than ever before (but just raggedy enough to keep things “real”) Mr. Wick fights in a punishingly brutal style that builds on what director Chad Stahelski invented for the character in the previous films. This is a character who appears to know every single language under the sun, but violence is the most expressive part of his vocabulary (Reeves speaks maybe 100 words in the entire movie. Chinese wushu, Japanese judo, Southeast Asian silat, American Glock… Wick is fluent in them all. But while Stahelski and his team have obviously put a great deal of thought into every frame of fisticuffs, “Parabellum” is so relentless that it often devolves into a numbing flurry of shoulder flips and headshots. If “Chapter 2” bordered on high art for how cleverly it weaved tactical shootouts into public locations (and made every fight operate like an organic bit of world-building) “Chapter 3” is more out in the open. A sneaky little skirmish in Grand Central Station doesnt live up to Stahelskis creative potential, even if its amazing they pulled off the scene at all. Elsewhere, a motorcycle chase along an empty Manhattan bridge is too rushed and blurry to deliver the “Fury Road” ferocity it teases, and the climactic brawl? —? which makes great use of some familiar faces, and hinges on a funny dynamic of mutual respect—is overwhelmed by a set that looks like a high-end watch commercial, and feels like a watered-down retread of the house of mirrors sequence from the end of the previous movie. Driven by a profound respect for the expressive power of beating someone to death, and empowered by their 54-year-old stars remarkable skill and commitment, Stahelski and the other poets of percussive carnage that work at his 87Eleven Productions are still (a severed) head and shoulders above the rest of Hollywoods stunt community. But they can do more with this character, even if it means slowing things down and widening them out. To that end, its telling that the most exciting brawl in “Parabellum” (with the possible exception of a knife fight in a Chinatown antiques store) maintains a more expansive vision, as Mr. Wick fights alongside Halle Berry and some four-legged sidekicks. Traveling to Casablanca for reasons that are never adequately explained, Mr. Wick meets up with an assassin named Sofia who owns a pair of well-trained Malinois dogs; like every other supporting character in this movie, theres mixed blood between them, and she owes him something for some reason. There are coins and seals and lots of jibber jabber about High Table manners and then “Game of Thrones” star Jerome Flynn shows up as a Bronn-like business type whos a bit too greedy for his own good (its hard to tell what accent Flynn is doing here, but hes most definitely doing it. When the bullets fly, Sofias very The Times of Bill Cunningham lend a valuable assist, and Stahelski has to open things up in order to frame the dogs as they chew on fresh corpses. The sequence is very “John Wick” and horribly terrific in a hand-over-your-mouth kind of way; it does more than any of the tossed-off business with the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburn) or the Continental Hotel owner (Ian McShane) to whet our appetites for another adventure. Anjelica Huston is also somewhat wasted as the matriarch of a Harlem ballet academy with ties to Wicks past, but her scenes are so immaculately shot that youre willing to let it slide. In a film that plays fast and loose with NYC geography, all is forgiven by turning 175th streets United Palace into the “Tarkovsky Theater, ” where people are trained to be killers in between performances of “Swan Lake. ” The films world-building works best in small doses. A meeting in the middle of the desert is a total dead end, whereas all sorts of fun details can be inferred from Stahelskis frequent cutaways to the High Table nerve center, where dozens of tattooed and lip-glossed workers monitor Wicks bounty with an old-fashioned switchboard (imagine a SuicideGirls reboot of “Mad Men” and youll have the right idea. Non-binary “Billions” star Asia Kate Dillon plays a stiff and slinky High Table adjudicator whos covered in Thierry Mugler coture; part referee and part femme fatale, their performance speaks to an underworld thats sustained by a mutual respect for all people so long as they dont shoot the wrong target. While this franchise is starting to feel a bit long in the tooth, such details suggest that screenwriter Derek Kolstad (here sharing credit with three other scribes) can still mine this world for plenty of new life, so long as future installments find a way to deepen the John Wick mythos instead of just stretching it out. With the significant exception of “Mission: Impossible, ” this is easily the best action franchise Hollywood has going these days, and it would be great for it to keep going with renewed focus. The fact that Keanu Reeves is nearing 60 wont matter to his fans. For one thing, the man is seemingly ageless. For another, retirement no longer seems like a realistic option for a guy who still gets recognized everywhere he goes. It doesnt matter if youre a Hollywood star or a 14 million bounty—fame can be a difficult thing to shake. Its a work-or-die world, and being forgotten is neither on the table nor under it.
